Joe's Games
Software written by Joe Savelberg
Welcome to my software archive!
This page contains a list of programs that have been written by me. All of my software is released under the label of "Joe's Games" - now known as "JMS Communications". Most of the software is written using Apple Computer's HyperCard programming environment.

Educational
- PhysicsGraph
- PhysicsGraph calculates and displays the results of various formulas in physics. This was written to help me speed up my physics homeworks when I was in high school. Unfortunately this software isn't available any more as it was lost during a hard disk crash.
- SpeedCalculator
- Actually I am not sure any more whether or not this is correct name. It was also integrated into the PhysicsGraph. This stack allows you to calculate the average speed by entering a distance and the time needed to cover that distance. The nice thing is that you can see an animation of the difference in speed (a little car drives across your screen in pixels per seconds rather than kilometers per hour). Download it!
- VocabularyTest
- This software was written shortly before my exam period in the early years at high school. I used it to learn my vocabulary for different languages, especially French. Example files and editor are included. It can also be used to study other single-line questions such as "which is the capital of Belgium" (answer: Brussels). Download it!

Games
- A Nightmare 2.0
- If you are looking for a great adventure game, look no further! A Nightmare includes nice sounds, special effects and more than 250 hand-drawn sceneries. It used to be shareware, but now its free. If you want to create your own adventure game in HyperCard you can use this as an example. (This stack was inspired by the many WorldBuilder games - anybody remembers those?) Download it!
- Joe's Bandit
- This is a slot machine. There are a lot of different slot machine games for the Mac, so I thought I might write my own version using HyperCard. (Up to four players.) Download it!
- LoveTest
- Wouldn't it be nice to know if your partner really loves you? This test is going to tell you the truth. Well, it's based on two love tests which used to circulate classes when I was in high school. As we were to lazy to calculate the results ourselves, I wrote this little program in a few hours. Unfortunately, I lost a version that could handle 4 different languages in a hard disk crash - and no, I didn't have any backup. Shame on me! I am thinking of creating a cgi with the same function. Download the English version!
- Voyage to Mars
- This game was also lost in the same hard disk crash as the above one. You had to find the right way to get to the Mars and back again. It was a small game in worldbuilder fashion - only 60 hand-drawn images and some sounds. It was fun to create, though.

Utilities
- Comparer
- Comparer is a utility to compare your direcotries. It tells you which versions of a file are newer (based on the modification date, the version information or the size). It scans all kind of volumes and there are plug-ins to analyse file lists of online resources (such as FTP sites, AppleLink, FirstClass BBSes, eWorld). If you want, you can even update your harddrives automatically. Read the online documentation for more information. Download it!
- HyperRuler
- HyperRuler adds a new menu to HyperCard's menubar. This menu lets you display a horizontal and a vertical ruler. It uses pixels. Some additional feature: access your calculator and your scrapbook on the fly, measure distances between points, get the location of the mouse. Download it!
- PowerMenus
- PowerMenus is a collection of 14 popular utilities for HyperCard. These utilities are arranged in a new menu. Using an installer card, you can decide which utilities to install. Some of the utilities included are: antivirus monitor for HyperCard, TextOnly menu lite, HyperRuler, Collect Scripts, ResCopy, Unprotect, palettes for user level, paint tools, object properties, etc. PowerMenus reveiced a 3 mice rating by ZiffNet and it was reviewed in some European Macintosh magazines. Download it!
- TextConverter
- Have you ever wanted to replace a string or a list of strings in a text file by another string? TextConverter does this for you. It can even process a whole folder of files. For explanation of other features read the online documentation. Download it!
- TextOnly Menu
- TextOnly Menu adds a new menu to HyperCard's menubar which lets you open, edit and save text files in a separate window. You don't need to edit your text files in other program's than HyperCard any more. Download it!
- TextScalpel
- You should use TextScalpel whenever you want to split a text file into smaller chunks. You decide when to create another file based on the file length, based on paragraphs or a character or string that you specify. Also lets you split a text file into equal length files, e.g. to avoid the 32K Text-Edit limitation in some programs. Also works with folders. Extensive documentation is available using the online help. Download it!
- ValidateEngine
- This XFCN is used in some of my newer programs. If a user has payed his/her shareware fee then the registration key is passed to this engine to enable all functions of the program and to disable the time limit. If you are interested in this external, please send e-mail to jochen@euregio.net

Vertical Solutions
- Auto-BBSAdmini
- Auto-BBSAdmini was written for Mactivity - macclub benelux. It allows to validate auto-registered users on Mactivity's BBS systems automatically (in coperation with the billing department). Every night Auto-BBSAdmini compares the list of autoregistered users to a list of paying members of the macclub benelux. If a user entered the correct userID, his privileges are upgraded to reflect his status, otherwise his privileges are set to expired user. The administrator of the BBS only has to list the users with those privileges once in a while and to delete their accounts. If you are running a FirstClass BBS and you are interested in a similar solution, please send e-mail to jochen@euregio.net.
- ExportCollector
- ExportCollector is a utility that can extract messages from a FirstClass BBS. It allows you to create a separate (readable) text file with the contents of the message or you can export all messages to a HyperCard stack to use it as electronic newsletter or offline-reader. This program was used to create disks with messages from the BBSes of Mactivity - macclub benelux for members who don't have a modem. If you are running a FirstClass BBS and you are interested in a similar solution, please send e-mail to jochen@euregio.net.
- UserTime.cgi
- At the moment I am writing this cgi for euregio.net. It takes a UserID and a password from a HTML form and then querries euregio.net's TACACS server to get the time spend online for that user account for the current month. If you are a customer of euregio.net then you should be able to test this cgi within a couple of days. Do you need a similar tool? Please send e-mail to jochen@euregio.net
- Web-Enrichment
- This is an add-on to ExportCollector. It hasn't been written yet, but the product outline is finished already. Web-Enrichment adds basic HTML tags to the documents that were created by ExportCollector. If you want to know at what stage the development is, please send e-mail to jochen@euregio.net.
Company Background
In 1988, I started to write shareware games for the Apple Macintosh. When I started marketing my games, I thought it would be better to distribute them under a label. So I created the software label "Joe's Games".
At that time my goal was to create cheap, high quality shareware games. As I grew older I became more serious ;-) and started to write educational software as well. I got into the utilities market by writing software that helped me to program my own programs. Some people thought I should release those utilities and now I am writing mostly utilities and vertical applications.
However it was too late to change the name of my software label as it was already known and I had even created a company letterhead ;-)
Recently Joe's Games was renamed into JMS Communications which now combines the activities of Joe's DTP and Joe's Games. These branches provide desktop publishing and webtop publishing as well as telecommunication/Internet services and IT/IS consultancy.
